She laid next to him. Her breathing was rapid, but quiet as she listened for him. His chest moved rapidly, but there was no sound. He faced away from her so she couldn't see his face.
She lifted her head and then lay back down. Her hair fell over her face, obscuring her view even more.
She sighed a little. "I may be the stupidest girl who ever lived."
"Why?" he asked, his voice a bit of a groan, "do you say that?"
Neither of them moved, a breath passing between them.
"I love you." She held her breath, listening for a subtle change in him. "I've tried to let go. But no matter who I love, the feelings can't compare."
She didn't wait for a reply. She didn't hold her breath. She didn't sit up and look at him waiting for answer.
She rolled out of bed and walked to the bathroom. She turned the shower on pushed her head under the warm flow of the water, drowning out any sound he might make.
